Singapore Design Festival '07 #1

This is the most interesting place I've visited during my Singapore trip to its Design Festival back in early December last year. Namely Old School but it's not a school but it used to be a school. It's quite a new place or sort of an art hub founded by a group of Singapore designers. There was an exhibition, DUAL CITY SESSIONS: NULL held in its hall which Mr Henry and I visited and later on had our tea time in a tranquil cafe inside the hub. A perfect rest place after a long day of walking around in the city.

I personally love the directory and signage in the buildings. It was formed by beautiful old serif typeface.

There's a Sinema in Old School too. An independent cinema dedicated to Singapore films.

長崎県美術館 Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum

It's beautiful. A museum that breathes as describe by the design firm, ndc.
Using thin lines to create motion without using anything digital, to adapt the movement of nature into design, this is great idea. Natural and beautiful.
The landscape and environmental design of the museum got me drawn into stillness, being there I could feel no sense of time.
But too bad I'm not there, yet. :(

The logo that moves. (In the site, click on the thumbnail to view how the logo lines were formed.)

Great design is always simple.

*Imitating is fun! Haha~*

the INFLUENCES

"It was enjoying."

**************************************************************

I would have lost my sense if i were to say this to T.O.A but honestly, thanks for having the workshop had been carried out in T.O.A premises with the attendace of 30 students and 2 speakers/leading characters, Anna Gerber and Anja Lutz based on the book which is a collaborated work between the two designers in year 2006.
Based on the concept of th
e book, the workshop is about exploring influences, looking at who or what provokes, inspires and informs working methods and research processes. The aim of the workshop was to raise our(students) awareness about our own influences. We were encouraged to explore and investigate those influences in different ways.

Here's what we were asked to do:
1-Identify 5 of our own influences;

2- Choose 1 from the 5 influences, create a piece of work that reflects and communicates what your influences is;
3- consider the form and dimension according to the influence you want to get across.

Well, kinda easy huh? It has such a big room for you to explore on the given brief and all i know is that i'm gonna have some fun!

-After all students had explained their artwork....

-It's my turn to explain how Disney's cartoon had influenced me in a way.

The Gerber's Anna

ANNA is quite a common name but the first Anna I've ever know is my sister.
My elder sister is Anna. Anna is my elder sister.

Anna is also a song by the Beatles. (...go with him~Anna~...)

Now, this Anna i'm talking about is coming to meet me! ;p
Anna Gerber,a graphic designer and a writer based in London.
Reading her portfolio is like telling myself she's 'somebody' in the design field.
She writes regularily for Eye, IDEA, CR, PRINT
, DOT DOT DOT etc...
(the most rated magazines among designers and probably myself had read some of her articles before in those magazines without knowing her.)
But truly one thing i'm amazed about Anna Gerber is that, I then only found that she's the one who wrote and designed ALL MESSED UP: Unpredictable Graphics. A cool book with aspects on the art of accidental printing error and edgy stuff.

Anna Gerber is coming to Malaysia with Anja Lutz for seminars and workshop!
What a great honour to have them in our college giving talks and workshop. When i received call from Rico telling me i've been selected to attend this workshop dedicated to only 30 students from all major in the college, i'm like, wow, i would go no matter what!

Lots of expectation has been given to this Shift! seminar and the workshop, well i guess they'll just talk about the Shift! project's concept and probably showing some works.

I'm thinking of questions that i could ask them....

So what's inside my MOJOSKINE idea book?
THE FIRST PAGE- my contact details

At the corner of one of the page, i wrote:
"I want a library that i can drink coffee in. -18/03/07"

It's really suffering when you are going through great books without a great sip of coffee.
